New General Surgeon joins PeaceHealth Medical Group

General Surgeon William Sims, MD, has just joined the PeaceHealth Medical Group in Ketchikan, Alaska.

Dr. Sims has been practicing general surgery for 23 years. Most recently, Dr. Sims was a senior partner in group practice at the Mountain Valley Surgery in Sylva, North Carolina. He received his doctorate from the Texas Tech University, Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine and went on to complete his residency there as well. He has been a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons since 2001.

Dr. Sims looks forward to practicing medicine in a rural setting again, having spent two years in Hobart, Oklahoma after finishing his residency. “I’ll be able to put my years of experience to good use here,” explained Dr. Sims, “providing additional surgery options for people in this area so they won’t need to travel away from their homes and families to get the surgical services and care they need.”

Previous patients found him to be “kind, patient and professional,” saying he is, “honest and explains everything.”

Dr. Sims plans to work hard developing trusting relationships with his patients and throughout the community. “The partnership between a hospital and the community it serves is critical. We need each other.” he explains. “Each member of the community needs to understand that this is their hospital—embracing and supporting its future. It makes sense economically, as well as socially.”

The compassionate mission of PeaceHealth is in keeping with Dr. Sims. In 2010 he served as surgeon on a medical mission to the Baptist Medical Center in Nalerigu, Ghana.

Dr. Sims and his wife Amy Wilson, a nurse practitioner, look forward to serving the health needs of our community. Having left a very behind a very demanding and busy practice, they hope to achieve a balance that allows for more time to enjoy the many outdoor activities, arts and culture Southeast Alaska has to offer their family.
