Rheumatology

Specialty Care for Arthritis & Related Diseases

Rheumatology is the branch of medicine related to disorders in muscles, tendons or joints. Specialists in this field are medical doctors who have additional training in Rheumatology.

Rheumatologists deal mainly with clinical problems involving joints, soft tissues and conditions of connective tissues. Symptoms often include:

  • Persistent joint pain
  • Joint pain made worse by movement
  • Limited range of motion
  • Inflammation (swelling)
  • Stiffness

Arthritis may be the most well-known disease treated by rheumatologists. Others include:

  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
  • Scleroderma (systemic sclerosis)
  • Dermatomyositis
  • Polychondritis
  • Polymyositis
  • Polymyalgia rheumatica
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Septic arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia

Both children and adults can be affected by rheumatoid-related conditions.

Treatment options generally include medications, injections, physical therapy and occupational therapy. Some conditions can be treated in one visit. Severe conditions may require ongoing treatments.

Your primary-care provider may refer you to a rheumatologist if you need this care.
