Allergy & Immunology

Specialty Care for Immune System Disorders

More than 50 million Americans nationwide are affected by allergy. People can develop allergies during childhood or later in life.

Our body’s immune system is critical for protecting us from infections and cancers. During an allergic reaction, however, the immune system acts aggressively against something that is harmless. A variety of environmental triggers can cause allergic reactions. Common allergens are:

  • Foods (milk, eggs, nuts, seafood & others)
  • Venomous insect stings (honey bees, yellow jackets & others)
  • Airborne allergens (pollens, dust & pet dander)
  • Contact allergens (nickel, gold, epoxy & others)
  • Medications (penicillin & others)
An allergic response can cause symptoms such as watery eyes, sneezing, congestion, cough, wheezing, difficulty breathing, swelling, hives, vomiting, diarrhea and losing consciousness. Allergic reactions can be mild and unpleasant or severe and, in some cases, life-threatening.

Allergists and immunologists specialize in diagnosing and treating people with allergies and asthma. This type of specialist helps identify what "triggers" an allergic reaction and determines ways to manage the condition when you can't avoid those triggers.

Allergy and immunology specialists also see people with recurrent infections potentially caused by a disorder of the immune system. Identification of immune deficiencies can allow for treatments to prevent future infections.
