Scott McGuinness, MD, was honored by The Arc of Whatcom County in a surprise celebration Sunday, Jan. 20, in the PeaceHealth Medical Group (PHMG) conference center.

Dr. McGuinness, who began working as a pediatrician in Bellingham in 1989 and joined PHMG in 2008, recently left his practice to become a hospitalist at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center. Originally from Yakima and the son of a pediatrician, Dr. McGuinness received degrees from the University of Washington and completed his residency at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Jim Bochsler, MD, of PHMG pediatrics, said his colleague has made a meaningful impact.

“He had a large and very committed group of patients to whom he provided exemplary care,” said Dr. Bochsler. “His kindness and commitment will be missed in our out-patient clinic, but we are very pleased that Dr. McGuinness agreed to help us start our full-time in-patient service.”

The Arc (Advocating for the Rights of Citizens with developmental disabilities) joined PeaceHealth in celebrating Dr. McGuinness’ transition and honoring his many years of compassionate care for all patients, including those with disabilities.

“We honor Dr. McGuinness for his tremendous dedication and outstanding care for children with development disabilities and special health care needs,” said Amy McKinley of The Arc. “He has shared the journey with many families as they faced difficult challenges and provided not only medical care but also support and guidance.

“As we work to create a more inclusive and respectful community for all individuals with developmental disabilities, we applaud Dr. McGuinness for always seeing the individual first, and disability second,” said McKinley.

The Arc of Whatcom provides support and services to nearly 2,000 families in the community. Programs include educational workshops, one-to-one support for families and individuals, community advocacy, leadership skill-building and much more.
