Our Project Partners

Architect:  Mahlum

Mahlum, a Seattle architectural firm specializing in healthcare facilities, is the architect for the project.  Deeply rooted in the Northwest and with strong Island ties, Mahlum, established in 1938, brings innovative thinking and community commitment to the undertaking. The firm believes that by creating spaces that consistently express the culture, aspirations and identity of the communities they serve, the distinctive character of each is honored. Mahlum focuses on creating inspired work that is realistic to implement technically, financially, politically and socially. They consider environmental stewardship a professional imperative. Mahlum takes seriously the responsibility to use resources wisely – re-using building materials, selecting locally made products, designing low-impact building systems and demanding resource conservation for all of their projects.  Working with civil engineers, landscape architects, mechanical engineers and experts in energy and water conservation, and others, the architects have created a building that will harmonize with its environment and be sustainable long into the future.  They have collaborated closely with and been very responsive to the requests and concerns of PeaceHealth and the local Design Committee, and the result is a medical center and small hospital that not only is appropriate to the site, but also reflects the Island culture.

General Contractor:  Howard S. Wright Constructors

Howard S. Wright Constructors (HSW) of Seattle has been chosen as the general contractor for creating PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center.  HSW brings extensive experience in the building of medical facilities and forges strong connections to the communities in which it works.  During construction the supervisor and his family will move to Friday Harbor full time and are looking forward to becoming part of the San Juan Island community.  HSW’s values include a focus on teamwork to maximize efforts, satisfaction, and results by having everybody working together toward a common goal. The firm is committed to be dynamic, flexible, and innovative in its approach and to be good neighbors to residents and businesses close to the building site. Sustainable facility design and building techniques are key elements of HSW’s professional practice with special efforts in the areas of energy conservation, waste minimization and commodity management, design and construction operations, and employee and community involvement and education.  During the design phase of the project HSW is involved with financial analysis and materials identification and is assuring that our medical center will have the best possible design at the best possible cost.

HSW has begun to solicit information from local contractors who would like to participate in the project, and the firm will use local personnel on the site.  For further information, contact Josh Condon at Howard S. Wright Constructors, condonj@hswc.com.
