The Location
PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center will be located at 1049 San Juan Valley Road in Friday Harbor, WA, adjacent to the airport. The 22-acre site slopes from a rocky knoll down to a natural wetland and meadows below. Douglas firs dot the landscape. The beauty of the site will create a tranquil environment for the medical center and those who work and visit there, and the design of the buildings will both reflect and take advantage of the natural setting. Building elements will fit the contours of the slope, and many areas will be left natural with every effort made to retain as many of the trees on the property as possible. The goal is a facility which is of, not on, the site and quietly nestled into the natural and enhanced landscaping. Walking trails will wind through the fir trees and down the rocky knoll, connecting to current community trails and offering views of gardens and across near and distant landscapes.
The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will also move to the new medical center campus, but will remain under the supervision of the Hospital District. The EMS building design will harmonize with the landscape and the new medical center.
