The Living Building Challenge

The PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center is being designed to meet, as far as practical, the standards of the Living Building Challenge.  This is a certification program that defines the most advanced measure of sustainability possible in today’s buildings and strives to diminish the gap between current limits and ideal solutions.  It is based on design imperatives related to site, water, energy, health, materials, equity, and beauty.  The Challenge is not regimented; it is a tangible way to press forward and encourage a team commitment to innovative solutions.  Not all elements will be appropriate for the new medical center, but the Challenge provides a framework for planning and development to assure that PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center is designed with attention focused on all issues of sustainability that will provide benefits for many years to come.
