About The DesignAbout the Design

The PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center, as a place of healing and wellness and as a vital community resource, will offer a warm, inviting environment in support of patient and family care and staff and visitor comfort. It has been designed to take best advantage of the site, allowing for maximum natural light, windows that open to fresh island air, easy movement within the facility and an atmosphere of calm beauty.

The facility will be divided into three low rise buildings fitted into the contours of the natural landscape and connected by two glass walled “bridges,” creating a “spine” that links the main entry on the lower level with the Emergency Department on the upper level.  Public spaces will include the main lobby, multi-purpose conference room, central patient lounge, a gallery spine, and a quiet space for meditation and private reflection.

The medical clinic, cancer care center, and laboratory will be on the lower level.  The mid-level building will house the Imaging Department, in-patient rooms, and administrative offices; and the Emergency Department will be accessible from its own ambulance and walk-in entrances on the upper level.

To provide continuity and connection with its natural setting, the materials used for the new facility will primarily be wood, glass, stone, and textured concrete.  Natural light will be important throughout the facility, enabled by the shed roofs and the orientation of the three buildings with space between for light and air circulation. Inside and outside, the PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center design is both timeless and future-oriented with built-in flexibility for growth and advancement in medical care standards.
