PeaceHealth Medical Group in Florence partner with Siuslaw and Mapleton school districts for School Sports Physical Day
On Wednesday May 16th, PeaceHealth Medical Group in Florence partnered with the Florence and Mapleton School Athletic Directors to provide Sports Physicals to students. Nearly all schools and youth sports leagues require that players have a complete sports physical in order to participate in extracurricular sports in grades 7 through 12.
PeaceHealth Medical Group contributes medical supplies and the time and expertise of 6 to 7 physicians and 7 to 8 Medical Office Assistants for the Sports Physicals. Sports physicals can be obtained during School Sports Physical day at the middle school at no cost to the student. School Sports Physicals which are performed at the Clinic as an office visit do result in a charge.
During School Sports Physical Day the students received a “School Sports Pre-Participation Examination”. A School Sports Pre-Participation Examination included height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, eye chart exam and examination by a physician. Also included was a health history questionnaire that asked about the child's medical history of injury, illness or conditions, such as asthma to ensure that they are being properly managed.
This pre-participation physical exam is an important part of safe sports participation. The exam can help screen athletes for potential illness or conditions that may limit or restrict their sports activity. It helps make sure that kids who play sports are physically capable of meeting the demands of a sport and don't have any conditions that may be aggravated by intense exercise. Sports Physicals are usually required about a month prior to start of practice in order to allow time for addressing any medical conditions that are uncovered so a child can still participate in the sports even if they need to modify their training routine.
The school staff was well prepared with each station having a separate room set aside and all windows were covered by paper for privacy. The children moved through the stations very quickly.
This year 195 middle school and high school students were seen. 156 students were from the Siuslaw School District and 39 were transported over from the Mapleton School District.
The goal of the sports physical is to help keep sports safe and accessible to every student who wants to play.
