Emergency Services provide 24/7 care at both Sacred Heart Medical Center campuses, RiverBend and University District. With the latest medical technologies and specially trained clinicians, these services are designed and equipped to quickly serve patients in medical crises.
Trauma Center at RiverBend
The Level II Trauma Center at RiverBend handles life-threatening emergencies that may require surgery. The Trauma Center’s comprehensive services and around-the-clock availability of all necessary medical specialties and staff provide a level of care that is unavailable at other regional hospitals. Wait time is minimized by the Center’s design. Upon entry, the patient’s condition is assessed in one of three triage rooms. The patient is then transferred to a private, single patient room. Computerized nursing stations between every two of the 44 patient rooms enable caregivers to have easy access to each patient.
Emergency Department at University District
A full service 24-hour Emergency Department continues to be a vital part of the University District hospital, providing area residents with the security of knowing that emergency services are nearby. The ED treats walk-in emergencies such as broken bones and lacerations, and can provide emergency transportation to RiverBend if necessary. Leading edge diagnostic imaging equipment, and a range of support services (such as pharmacy, laboratory, and respiratory care) remain on site.

Emergency Transportation
Eugene and Springfield’s emergency medical services (EMS) provide immediate short-term treatment and ambulance transportation. You can depend on their highly-trained staff to know which hospital is best for you, and to get you there with speed and expert care. The ability of the two cities’ emergency medical services to coordinate coverage has been honored with the prestigious Paramedic Service of the Year Award, sponsored by the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Our Staff
Emergency/Trauma Services at both hospitals are staffed with registered nurses trained in advanced life support and trauma resuscitation. Doctors with Eugene Emergency Physicians are board certified in emergency medicine and work exclusively at Sacred Heart. Advanced electronic medical record technology provides ED clinicians with immediate access to patients’ medical information, including up-to-the-minute test results, treatment plans and patient progress reports for rapid medical decision-making. The staff works closely with other hospital departments and services, including Respiratory Therapy, Radiology, Pharmacy, Behavioral Health, Oregon Medical Laboratories and Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute to provide the best possible care.
