conducted in preparation for Move Day.

The moving of up to 300 patients from Sacred Heart University District to Sacred Heart at RiverBend is scheduled to take place on Aug. 10, 2008. Sacred Heart has been working with professional hospital movers to plan the move for two years, culminating in a series of mock moves conducted in spring and summer 2008.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How many patients are we moving, and how fast are we going to move them?

Our plan allows for moving up to 300 patients over 10 hours, starting at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 10. We hope we will be moving fewer patients than that, however. By halting elective surgery a few days before the move, we will reduce our patient census. A more realistic number might be 150 to 160. We will move three patients at a time from three different staging areas. Each staging area will be moving a patient every six minutes, 10 per hour, 30 patients per hour combining all three staging areas, for a total of 300 patients across 10 hours. Not all patients will be move; those in our behavioral health and rehabilitation units, along with some medical patients, will remain at Sacred Heart University District (see below).

Who is involved in the transferring of patients from University District to RiverBend?

The transfer process will be well coordinated among a team of professionals to include the Sacred Heart staff, the Life Flight trained transport teams and the Eugene/Springfield EMS providers. The attending physician will make the decision to transport individual patients, will provide the necessary orders for the move, and will be kept informed of the patient’s status. Patients will be accompanied by their primary care nurse throughout the entire move process.

What is the estimated time per patient to move from their room at University District to their room at RiverBend?

Total transit is expected to take about 45 minutes per patient. Expected cycle time for each ambulance is 1 hour.

What is the patient move route?

Ambulances will travel on I-105 eastbound to I-5 north and exit at Belt Line to get to the RiverBend campus. Patient families are encouraged to take Franklin Boulevard to Pioneer Parkway.

Why are we moving all patients on one day rather than more gradually?

While many departments will move starting as early as June 1, the patient move requires extremely careful synchronization of staff, ambulances, regulators, Oregon Department of Transportation, police, fire and some medical providers such as other Level 2 trauma centers. For all these reasons, hospitals try to move all patients in one day. Some leeway exists to allow patients who are near discharge to remain at University District.

After RiverBend opens, what services will remain at University District?

This location will continue to operate a 24-hour Emergency Department and 104 inpatient beds even after the RiverBend campus opens. Key services at University District will include behavioral health, an acute care of elders unit, inpatient rehabilitation and the Gamma Knife Center. A $97 million renewal of Sacred Heart Medical Center University District, which has served in its current location for more than 70 years, will begin in fall 2008.
