About Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute

Cardiologist Leonard Christie, M.D., founder of the Oregon Heart Center and medical director until 1996

The Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute grew out of the Oregon Heart Center, founded by Leonard Christie, MD, which for 20 years provided an increasing array of diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation services to heart patients from throughout western Oregon. Even before OHC opened in 1984 to consolidate all aspects of cardiac care, Sacred Heart Medical Center had established itself as a leader in the care of patients with heart disease. It was here that the first open heart surgery in Oregon outside of Portland was performed in 1971. Establishment of the Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute in 2004 better integrates care of both the heart and the circulatory system and enhances the coordination of patient care, with physicians from four disciplines—cardiologists, interventional radiologists, vascular surgeons, and cardiovascular surgeons—all working together for the health of the patient. The institute also adds a research partnership with the University of Oregon and an emphasis on prevention and community education.
