Out of 1,000 people who have a standard discectomy, 1 to 2 will die. Out of 1,000 people who have a microdiscectomy, 1 will die. And out of 1,000 people who do not have surgery at all, 0 will die. Out of 1,000 people who have standard discectomy, 10 to 20 will have permanent nerve damage. Out of 1,000 people who have microdiscectomy, 1 to 3 will have permanent nerve damage. And out of 1,000 people who do not have surgery, 0 will have permanent nerve damage.
