Pastoral and Spiritual Care Services

The Chaplain is available to help with the distressed families of critically ill or dying patients

Chaplain Sr. Arnadene Bean

The Healthcare Chaplain makes daily rounds and is available 24-hours a day to provide pastoral care for patients, family and staff.

What Does The Healthcare Chaplain Do?

Liaison with Local Clergy

Usually the Healthcare Chaplain sees a patient before his/her minister is aware of the hospitalization. With the patient's permission, the Chaplain can call the family pastor, priest or other religious leader. The Chaplain provides pastoral care and support until the patient's own minister arrives.

Contact for the Community

The Chaplain often serves as our public relations person to the religious community.  The Chaplain is able to coordinate services provided by the clergy.

Support for Patients' Families

The Chaplain is available to help with the distressed families of critically ill or dying patients. If the patient does not have his/her own minister, the Chaplain serves as a friend and pastoral figure.

In House Pastor for Staff

In the often stressful, demanding healthcare environment, the Chaplain can provide a listening ear and a pastoral point of view for staff as they face professional or personal problems.

No One Dies Alone (NODA) Program

Occasionally, terminally ill patients come to PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center who have neither family nor close friends to be with them as they near the end of their life.  NODA is a volunteer program which provides the reassuring presence of a volunteer companion to dying patients.  With the support of the nursing staff, companions are able to assist patients through a dignified death.  All PeaceHealth employees and volunteers are invited to participate as Compassionate Companions. Sister Arnadene coordinates the program.

Memorial Service in May

A public memorial service is held to honor and remember the people who died at PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center in the preceding year.
