First Bank Invests in the Future of Health Care
In a remote region, such as ours, we stick together. We are fortunate to know so many of our neighbors and fellow community members and know that they will be by our side in times of need. We’re also fortunate to have a business community that is so supportive of the many groups who come to them for support each year—giving items for auction, donating services or tours, sponsoring local teams and programs, and even giving sizable cash donations.
We’re especially fortunate to have one business that gives in such a way that the gifts help community members understand the true value and benefit of philanthropy—both for the giver and the recipient. First Bank is that business and their award-winning Community Service Award Program is designed to pass along a passion for philanthropy by providing matching funds to groups who go into the community to raise funds for another community organization. The participants get the benefit of doing something to help another group in the community while at the same time helping their own group; a real win-win-win situation.
This program is not the only way First Bank gives back in our community. They also have an annual employee giving campaign to help raise funds on behalf of non-profits, from which PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center Foundation (PHKMCF) has benefitted on several occasions.
One of the most innovative and caring ways that First Bank has chosen to give to our community, though, is by investing into its future health care. First Bank led the way when PHKMC Foundation established an Endowment Fund in 2007 by making a 5-year, $100,000 pledge. The Endowment Fund will help our community secure funding for medical equipment and technology for future generations, When First Bank completed their first pledge, they confirmed their commitment by making an additional 5-year, $100,000 pledge to the Endowment Fund.
First Bank’s next $20,000 pledge payment is expected in January 2015, and with it, the original $1 million dollar goal for the Foundation’s Endowment Fund is within reach. With a $1 million dollar Endowment Fund in place, it is expected to generate $50,000 to $75,000 a year for new technology, equipment and services. As the largest single donor to the Endowment Fund, with their pledge of $200,000, First Bank’s giving has made this possible.
First Bank’s focus on community philanthropy shined as they co-host a gathering for non-profit organizations on November 15, 2014 in recognition of National Philanthropy Day. The celebration featured a special speaker sharing about philanthropy topics of note to those organizations who raise support to fund their operations and special projects in our community.
We are indeed a fortunate community to have this kind of commitment and partnership from a local business, which truly benefits every member of our community in one way or another.
