Ketchikan, Alaska

This vibrant little city at the southern tip of the Alaskan panhandle calls itself the Salmon Capital of the World. But there's more to Ketchikan than sport fishing. Work by local artisans fills the galleries crowded in the narrow downtown, squeezed between the mountains and the sea. Wildlife abounds, from bald eagles and bears to orca and humpback whales. Visitors throng the town in summer, many arriving via cruise ships. Don't try to drive here; Ketchikan is on an island, one of hundreds dotting Alaska’s Inland Passage. It's easy to get here by jet or ferry; from the plane or boat that delivers you, you may see the forests and bays of Misty Fjords National Monument or a totem pole on a remote island shore. Once you're here, you'll find float planes and sea kayaks as common as cars.
