Application Information

Minimum Eligibility & Requirements

All first year residency applications are selected through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The selection committee considers qualified applicants that sucessfully complete the requirements below:

  • Submit an application through Electronic Residency Application Service between September 15 and October 31 (Updates to active applications that are submitted during this time can be made after October 31.)
  • Complete the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) and/or the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners COMLEX examination. (While there is no minimum USMLE score, most applicants chosen for an interview have a score of 200 or higher.)
  • USMLE/COMLEX: Applicants cannot exceed two failures in any one of the USMLE Steps I, II  or Clinical Skills or four failures on total combined examinations
  • Applicants must be within three years of active medical practice, residency or fellowship training
  • Submit three physicians' letters of recommendation, including one letter from a family physician
  • Successful applicants will be asked to show proof that they can legally work in the US (Family Medicine of Southwest Washington is not able to sponsor visas of any type.)

International Medical Graduate (IMG) Applicants:

  • IMG applicants must complete at least one clinical rotation within a US academic medical setting and one of the three required letters of recommendation must be derived from this experience (Medical school or residency training program is required.)
  • IMG applicants must be within three years of medical school or residency training program (Applications will be considered if the rotation is an observership within a U.S. academic setting and a letter written by the supervising faculty attending physician is submitted.)

Selection Process & Instructions

Thank you for you interest in Family Medicine of Southwest Washington, one of 21 programs in the University of Washington's Family Practice Residency Network (WWAMI). All applications submitted to the University of Washington's Affiliated Family Practice Residency Network must use the ERAS process. Applications must be received no later than October 31. Early submission of applications facilitates the best choice of interview dates.

Following receipt of completed application materials, we will notify applicants regarding their interview status. The list of interview dates for the next class are listed below. FMSW accepts eight R-1 positions. All applications for R-1 positions should apply through the NRMP. FMSW's NRMP number is #1143-20.

Interviews for residency classes beginning in July take place during the previous November, December and January.

November 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25
December 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16
January 5, 6, 12 and 13
