PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center
Measure: Develop and test practices for preventing surgical site infections that will be fully implemented by January 1, 2010

Time Period Ending:  3/31/2013

What We Are Doing:
Our surgical team is committed to preventing surgical site infections. St. Joe's participates in the Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP), and we know antibiotic timing before surgery is critical. This program includes using a protocol, of giving pre-surgical antibiotics at a very specific time and stopping them when indicated after surgery. We also limit ourselves to using only chlorohexadine, the most effective and least irritating solution, for pre-operative skin preparation. We understand that there are risks with any surgery, so we carefully screen for any possible health conditions that might affect your recovery before your operation begins.
