PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center
Measure: Urinary Catheter Removed by PostOp Day 2

Time Period Ending:  12/31/2012

Rate: 100%

What We Are Doing:

At PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center we’ve developed a protocol to reduce the length of time a urinary catheter remains in place after surgery. If conditions - pre-determined by the Surgical Committee - are present, the nurse will evaluate the condition for removal of the catheter within two days. The surgeon can specify if they decide the patient will need the catheter for longer than two days and the nurse will follow up. A well-defined process ensures we closely monitor catheter days throughout a patient's hospital stay. This has enabled us to reduce the length of time catheters are used by 40%.
