Skin Cancer Screening

PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center will offer a skin cancer screening event on Saturday, June 8 from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. at the Cancer Center (3301 Squalicum Parkway).

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers and accounts for nearly half of all cancers in the United States. More than 3.5 million cases of basal and squamous cell skin cancers are diagnosed in this country each year. Melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, will account for more than 76,600 cases of skin cancer in 2013.

Some early signs and symptoms include:
  • A change in your skin, especially in the size or color of a mole, growth or spot
  • A new growth (even if it has no color)
  • Scaliness, oozing, bleeding or a change in the way a bump or nodule looks
  • The spread of pigmentation (color) beyond its border past the edge of a mole or mark
  • A change in sensation, such as itchiness, tenderness or pain

Skin cancer can be found early and both doctors and patients play important roles in finding skin cancer. Doctors will be on hand to do a brief examination of the arms and legs and above the chest or if a particular area of concern is noted by the participant. Participants are asked to wear short sleeved shirts and shorts (if arms and legs are to be examined).

The screening is painless and only takes about 10 minutes.

***Registration is required and a time can be reserved by calling the Cancer Center at (360) 788-8226. Space is limited to the first 50 participants.***
