St. Joseph Hospital’s Haggen Family Emergency and Trauma Center is designated as a Level-III Trauma Center in the Washington State Trauma System. Board-certified emergency physicians provide care 24 hours a day, and air ambulance service is also on call at all times. The emergency center is part of Whatcom County’s Emergency Medical Services network, playing a vital role in providing physician oversight to Medic One paramedics at the emergency scene. Air ambulance services are provided by Airlift Northwest. On average, the center sees more than 58,000 patients per year.In 2007, the emergency department underwent a major expansion. The new center is almost double in size, growing from 13,000 square feet to 22,000, and from 26 beds to 42. It is now better able to accommodate growth in the community and will eventually be able to serve up to 90,000 emergency patients per year. A $2 million donation from Rick and Sylvia Haggen and Don and Kathy Haggen helped support this $10 million expansion.
