Pediatric Surgery
We are excited to welcome pediatric surgeon, Garret Zallen, MD, to Sacred Heart Medical Center. Currently the only pediatric surgeon in the area, Dr. Zallen specializes in minimally invasive surgical approaches, with a special interest in congenital chest wall deformities. He has authored several papers on the subject.
Dr. Zallen will be a familiar face to referring providers and many young patients in the area. He joins us from Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, where about 30 percent of his patients came from in and around Lane County.
Zallen was assistant professor of pediatric surgery at OHSU. He completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at Children's Hospital in Buffalo and his surgical residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he obtained his medical education.
Zallen was named one of Portland's Top Docs for six years running, and he maintained on the busiest surgery practices in the state.
He will continue his charitable work with Portland's Shriners Children's Hospital, where he treats and performs surgery monthly on patients who can't afford to pay. He is also active with Athletes 4 Cancer, an organization he co-founded in 2007 to rebuild and renew the lives of young adult cancer survivors through outdoor adventure.
"I'm happiest seeing my patients after they're no longer in my care," he said. "Seeing them better -- to me that is the ultimate reward."
