Gastric Banding Surgery
Adjustable silicone gastric banding surgery uses a silicone elastomer band placed around the upper part of the stomach to simulate a small stomach pouch that can only hold a small amount of food. The remaining portion of the stomach is below the band. Food travels slowly through a small outlet between the two stomach portions, creating a sensation of fullness for the patient.
The majority of gastric banding patients lose an average of 44 percent of excess body weight after one year and experience a low rate of complications[1].
