Otolaryngologist Dennis Diaz, MD, performed the first endoscopic balloon dilation in the region on May 9, 2008, at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. Otolaryngologists now perform about 40 cases each year.
Also known as Balloon Sinuplasty™, the procedure uses an FDA-cleared, catheter-based device to gently dilate the blocked sinus ostium, restoring normal sinus drainage and function, often without tissue or bone removal. Patients have been known to return to normal activities within 24 hours of the procedure, which does not limit future treatment options in case of progressive disease.
