Pediatric Unit

St. Joseph Hospital Pediatric UnitPatient Care Team
Our physicians and pediatric staff work as a highly trained and skilled team providing exceptional and compassionate pediatric care to our community. Our professional nursing staff has an average of 15+ years of experience. Hospitalization can be a stressful time for you and your family; we hope the following information will make it easier for you to concentrate on your child’s care. If there are any concerns at any time, please ask to talk to the Nurse Team Leader, Unit Manager or the House Manager.

Model of Care: Family-Centered Care
We value a true partnership where family members and professionals are collaborative partners of the child’s care team in the pursuit of being responsive to the priorities and needs of families.

Preparing for your hospital stay & admission
You may want to bring a favorite blanket or toy. Your child will be assigned to a room based on diagnosis, age and gender. In the event you are moved to another room, please understand that we are looking out for all of our children and may need to move patients as new admissions arrive to ensure high standards of care.

Security / Visitor Guidelines
We believe that the parents and the hospital staff are partners in providing a safe, secure and comfortable environment. The Pediatric unit is a secured unit with multiple levels of security. Our visitor guidelines are supportive of family-centered care. We encourage one adult family member to stay with the child overnight. We ask that you limit the number of visitors to 1-3 at a time. Visitors may wait in the solarium located thru the north double doors. Visiting hours are 8 a.m. - 8:30 p.m. for everyone except parents.

Parents Partnering with Nursing Staff
Your child’s care is important to us. Parental participation in care is highly valued, as you know your child the best. We encourage you to:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially before leaving your child’s room.
  • We ask that all visitors wash their hands with soap and water or hand gel available in each room.
  • Get an accurate intake and output to assess your child’s hydration status by saving all diapers and urine via a urinal or “hat” container in the toilet for the nurse to weigh or measure.
  • Please be aware of how much your child is drinking. Your nurse will ask you for the amounts of fluid.
  • Please make sure that your child wears his or her identification bracelet at all times.
  • Children under the age of 2 will also wear an electronic tag as part of our security system.
  • Let us know of any changes or concerns you notice with your child’s recovery.
