You should be familiar with the terms of
your insurance coverage. This will help you
understand the hospital’s billing procedures and
charges. The hospital will bill your insurance carrier/
Medicare/Medicaid agency for you.
While you are in the hospital or after your discharge,
Financial Counselors are available to discuss any
questions or issues related to billing, insurance or
charity care. Hours: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through
Friday. Dial ext. 6500.
If You Have Health Insurance
We need a copy of your identification card. We also
may need the insurance forms that are supplied by your
employer or insurance company.
If You Are a Member of an HMO or PPO
Your plan may have special requirements, such as a
second opinion or pre-certification for certain tests
or procedures. It is your responsibility to make sure
the requirements of your plan have been met. If your
plan’s requirements are not followed, you may be
financially responsible for all or part of the services
rendered in the hospital. Some physician specialists
may not participate in your health care plan, and their
services may not be covered.
Level of Service
St. Joseph Hospital provides both acute inpatient care
that can be received only at a hospital and outpatient
care, which does not medically require full inpatient
service. Medicare and some others cover acute
inpatient care differently than outpatient care. As a
result, your own portion of payment responsibility
may be affected if you do not meet medical indications
for acute inpatient hospitalization. Ask for a Social
Worker if you have questions regarding your level of
care and payment responsibility.
If You Are Covered by Medicare
We need a copy of your Medicare card to verify
eligibility and process your Medicare claim.
You should be aware that the Medicare program
specifically excludes payment for certain items and
services. You need to clarify if your care will be
provided as inpatient or outpatient for clarification of
benefits. Deductibles and co-payments also are the
responsibility of the patient.
If You Are Covered by Medicaid
We need a copy of your Medicaid card. Medicaid
also has payment limitations on a number of services
and items.
Out-of-Pocket Charges
If you have any out-of-pocket charges, the hospital
offers a variety of payment methods. Personal
checks, VISA and MasterCard are accepted. Bank
contracts (personal loans) can be arranged for you
on the hospital premises by our Financial Counselors.
Installment payment plans may be arranged depending
on demonstrated need.
Financial Assistance Program
Patients who meet federal income guidelines may
qualify for reduced-cost or free care at St. Joseph
Hospital. To learn more or to request a Bridge
Assistance brochure, please contact a Financial
Counselor at ext. 6500.
