Allergies of various types are among the most common of health
problems and affect over 50 million Americans nationwide. Allergies
are an overreaction of the body's natural defense system against
infections. The immune system normally protects the body from
viruses and bacteria by producing antibodies to fight them. In an allergic reaction, the immune system starts fighting
substances that are usually harmless to humans, such as dust mites,
pollen, animal dander or a medicine, as though these substances were
trying to attack the body. This overreaction can cause itchy eyes or
an itchy nose, a runny nose, difficulty breathing, eczema, hives and
diarrhea. Allergic reactions can be unpleasant, and in some cases,
life-threatening. For more information on allergies,

and Resources page. |
