Ann and joe bertero's commitment
to the community lives on

Ann and Joe Bertero started a community legacy with the first seed planted at Joe’s Garden in 1933. This legacy stretched far beyond the boundaries of the garden through Ann and Joe’s commitment to many community causes.

Even though they have both passed away, their philanthropic tradition lives on in a $300,000 donation to the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation on their behalf by Paul Razore, a lifelong friend of Ann and Joe. The funds will go toward the renovation and expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department.

“Ann and Joe knew of and benefited from the excellent care at St. Joseph. What better gift than to help those in immediate need in a caring and personal manner and to encourage others to do the same.” Razore said, “I hope that this gift, like the seeds planted by Ann and Joe, will be a seed to encourage others to give to the hospital’s much-needed $10 million Emergency Department project.”

Work began in 2006 on the Foundation’s campaign to raise funds to support the
renovation of St. Joseph’s Emergency Department. The Emergency Department is
expanding from 13,500 to 22,800 square feet, allowing the department to grow from 26 beds to 42 beds with the ability to expand to 55.

The renovated emergency department will include designated sexual assault and health rooms; advance imaging capabilities and a new patient tracking system. Construction should be complete in fall 2007.

“I hope that this gift, like the seeds planted by Ann and Joe, will be a seed to encourage others to give to the hospital’s much-needed $10 million Emergency Department project.”
