St. Joseph Hospital Foundation

St. Joseph Hospital Foundation was incorporated in the fall of 2002 and exists to acquire and recognize charitable gifts and bequests that assist St. Joseph Hospital fulfill its mission, adhere to its core values and provide medical services to the Whatcom region.

Sickness doesn’t discriminate. It can disrupt the lives of the young, the old, the well off, or those barely getting by. St. Joseph Hospital never turns anyone in need away when it comes to health care. St. Joseph Hospital Foundation helps to provide a safety net when health care reimbursements and shifting economy negatively impact the Hospital. The St. Joseph Hospital Foundation ensures that the Hospital can fully extend the gift of health to our community.

Declining margins, rapidly changing and expensive technology, low reimbursement rates, labor shortages and government regulations are some of the problems faced by U.S. hospitals at this time. (For details, see our Frequently Asked Questions page.)  It has become increasingly clear that without community support, St. Joseph Hospital may be forced to delay capital purchases and cut back on vital programs and services. Unfortunately, vulnerable populations would be among those most affected by the cuts.  

Contributions to the St. Joseph Hospital Foundation help fund:

  • Charity care (in fiscal year 2007, St. Joseph Hospital provided $13 million in unreimbursed care)
  • Programs for seniors (such as the Center for Senior Health, Lifeline and Adult Day Health)
  • Healthcare for underprivileged infants and children
  • Purchase of new technology and updated medical equipment
  • Facility expansion to meet the needs of our growing community
  • Patient and staff education
  • and much more.

  • Funds are carefully managed and allocated by the volunteer Board of Directors, a group of highly respected business and community leaders.
