Community Report

Over 150 people attended the first Business Workforce Awards luncheon on Friday, August 20th in Eugene. The Lane Workforce Partnership and Lane Metro Partnership hosted this luncheon where Peace Harbor Hospital was recognized for its excellence in workforce development. Jim Barnhart, Don Bourland, Cathleen Coontz, Pixie Center from Peace Harbor as well as Bob Purscelley and Carolyn Whitaker from Lane Community College attended the luncheon. United States Senator Ron Wyden was on hand to present the award and Jim Barnhart received it on behalf of the hospital.

Don Bourland spearheaded a nationally recognized Career Pathways Initiative and partnered with Bob Purscelley of Lane Community College-Florence. The program is designed to address the health care shortages in our area. The Initiative, which uses a "Grown Our Own" approach, has been a wonderful model for other communities to emulate. It includes a high school Health Care Occupations program taught these last two years by Cathleen Coontz and will be taught this year by Kathy Haberly. Additionally there is a well-supported employee staff development program led by Cathleen Coontz, Health Careers and Learning and Development Coordinator who is also a Health Care Career Alliance member.
