Surgical Patient Care
With more than 18,000 cases a year, Sacred Heart Medical Center is one of the state’s busiest and most technologically advanced surgical centers. Many surgeons practicing here use advanced, minimally invasive, surgical techniques, including robotic-assisted surgery. With smaller incisions and less surgical trauma, minimally invasive surgery benefits patients by reducing pain, speeding recovery and improving outcomes.

Ear/Nose/Throat Surgery:
ENT physicians at Sacred Heart treat conditions including hearing loss, tumors, speech and larynx problems, chronic sinusitis and facial traumas. They also offer the latest surgical treatments for snoring, which can cause people to develop high blood pressure, thus increasing their chances for heart disease or stroke.

Gamma Knife:
As one of only two Gamma Knife facilities in the state, Sacred Heart Medical Center has the ability to provide gold standard treatment for brain tumors and other brain disorders. With the Gamma Knife, our team of neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and medical physicists are able to treat small or inaccessible tumors without making a single incision. Unlike traditional radiation therapy, treatment with the Gamma Knife is a single, painless procedure that takes just minutes and allows patients to return home on the same day.

David DeHaas performs an ileoanal
pouch procedure.
Gastrointestinal Surgery
The Ileoanal Pouch procedure is an extremely complex operation that helps patients with colitis lead happy, healthy and productive lives. While the typical procedure removes the disease and creates a “J-pouch” for waste storage, the experienced surgeons at Sacred Heart have perfected a unique “W-pouch,” an even more effective pouch technique that results in essentially zero incontinence, more freedom and improved quality of life for our patients.

Endoscopic Ultrasound with Fine Needle Aspiration is used to diagnose and biopsy esophageal, stomach, pancreatic and rectal cancers. It requires the talents of a well trained and highly-skilled gastroenterologist and Sacred Heart has the only physician in the region who performs this advanced technique.

General Surgery:
General surgeons practicing at Sacred Heart have extensive experience with minimally invasive procedures such as gallbladder and spleen removal, hernia repairs, appendix removal, and operations that involve the other major organs of the body.

Sacred Heart Medical Center is nationally recognized for the minimally invasive gallbladder removal procedure. The surgeons practicing here perform a high number of these operations each year and have the skills and experience to perform this procedure using just a few small incisions and video-guided technology.

Gynecologic Oncology Surgery:
Research demonstrates that board-certified and fellowship trained surgeons, like those at Sacred Heart, produce better quality surgery and outcomes for gynecological cancer patients. We provide the region’s premier program for treating cancers specific to women because these surgeons perform an extremely high volume of procedures.

Heart Surgery:
Incorporating the latest innovations in heart surgery at the Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute has made it one of the busiest and most successful cardiovascular surgery centers in the Northwest. We’ve performed more than 18,000 cardiovascular operations since our inception and over 500 annually. At this hospital within a hospital, procedures include open heart surgery, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, carotid artery plaque removal, valve repair and replacement, and minimally invasive atrial fibrillation treatment.

Orthopedic Surgery
Sacred Heart offers surgical care for hundreds of orthopedic conditions, where nationally-known orthopedic surgeons help patients keep everything properly connected and on track toward pain-free living. Sacred Heart has been the site for many surgical firsts, including advanced minimally invasive hip replacement and shoulder joint repair.

Pain Management Surgery:
Sacred Heart specialists in pain management perform surgical procedures that are life-changing for those suffering from chronic pain. These include surgically implantable drug delivery systems that use a small pump to deliver medication directly to receptors in the spinal cord; direct delivery requires significantly lower doses of medication in comparison to oral medications.

Dr. Swee Teh explains the complexity of the Whipple procedure and how it’s done with a minimally invasive approach.

Pancreatic Surgery:
Sacred Heart realizes superior outcomes for pancreatic cancer patients treated with the highly-complex laparoscopic Whipple surgical procedure. This delicate operation removes the gall bladder and part of the pancreas, followed by a very complex reconstruction of the digestive tract. And Sacred Heart is one of just a few hospitals in the world where this operation is done with a minimally invasive approach.

Pediatric Surgery:
Surgery for pediatric patients requires the touch and expertise of our specifically-trained pediatric surgeon. When additional expertise is required, we deploy a pediatric telemedicine program, where special cameras and monitors allow pediatric specialists to evaluate and interact with patients from a remote location.

Dr. Matt Thomson talks about kyphoplasty as a minimally invasive
way to treat compression fractures of
the spine. (1:30 video)
Spinal Surgery:
Interventional Radiologists practicing at Sacred Heart Medical Center treat compression fractures of the spine using Kyphoplasty. This is a minimally invasive technique where a small needle is inserted into the fractured bone. A small balloon is guided into place and inflated to raise the collapsed vertebra. The balloon is removed and replaced with bone cement.

It’s a procedure that gets patients in and out of the hospital the same day and results in significant reduction in back pain and significant improvements in mobility and quality of life.

Thoracic Surgery
Since 1992, Sacred Heart surgeons have performed video assisted thoracic operations to diagnose and treat heart and lung disease, muscle and nerve disorders, ulcers and other diseases. Our thoracic surgeons also recently performed more carotid artery plaque removal procedures than any other Oregon hospital with the number of post-operative complications well below the national average.

Urologic Surgery:
Our surgery suites are equipped for minimally invasive laparoscopic procedures, which speed patient recovery. Laparoscopic urology procedures include treatment for kidney, adrenal, testicular and prostrate cancer; urinary incontinence, and kidney stone removal.

Vascular Surgery
Peripheral Arterial Disease -
Interventional radiologists and vascular surgeons use minimally invasive techniques at the Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute in the non-surgical treatment of PAD or Peripheral Arterial Disease. PAD is a narrowing or blockage of arteries that results in poor blood flow to the arms and legs. It’s a problem that affects up to 12 million Americans, so it’s nice to have specialists right here who can help.

Non-surgical treatment options include carotid stenting, angioplasty and stenting, renal artery angioplasty with stent, and abdominal aortic stent graft.

Some cases require surgery. A number of proven surgical procedures have been developed to treat PAD. They include carotid endarterectomy, femoropopliteal bypass, tibioperoneal bypass, mesenteric bypass, and abdominal aortic bypass.

symptoms of PAD and how he is using
minimally invasive interventional
radiology as treatment. (2:10 video)
