Program Qualifications

Surgical
When determining the ideal candidate for bariatric surgery, the Oregon Bariatric Center follows the guidelines set forth by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery:
-
100 pounds overweight
-
BMI 40 or higher
-
documented attempts at weight loss
-
no alcohol/drug/smoking problems
-
BMI of 35-39.9 with presence of one or more co-morbidities (such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease)

Body Mass Index
Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated as [weight (pounds) ÷ height (inches)2] x 703. If you are 5’10” tall and weigh 260 pounds, the calculation would be [260 ÷ (70)2] x 703 = 37.3. This falls within the BMI category of morbidly obese (see chart below).
