Clinical Pastoral Education
at Sacred Heart Medical Center

Supervisory and educational philosophy

The program is administered by the Rev. Michael Hertz, a Presbyterian minister and a certified ACPE Supervisor. Supervision is provided by Michael and by the Rev. Janet L. Hanson, a Methodist minister and certified ACPE Supervisor.

Rev. Michael Hertz, M.Div., has more than 20 years of experience in ministry in Oregon, urban and suburban San Francisco Bay Area, and the rural upper Midwest. He has worked as a health care chaplain since 1989, serving in a variety of settings including an HIV/AIDS ward in San Francisco, pediatric and adult oncology units, emergency departments, and psychiatric and chemical dependency programs. He has ten years of experience as a Director of Pastoral Care and has been supervising students since 1991. He serves as a member of the ACPE Pacific Region’s Certification Committee and has been an active leader in Presbyterian congregations and presbyteries. His interests include outdoor sports, music, and creating hospitality and beauty in his home and garden.

"We all have parts of ourselves which we do not know and do not value,” Michael says. “I believe our unknown and unloved aspects are among the richest resources we can put to the service of our ministry. My goal as a CPE Supervisor is to help students know what is unknown, to transform their relationship to that which is unloved, and to put these aspects of self to use in ministry. I do so through a persistent, relational style that embodies honesty, risk-taking, creative expression and a close connection to the clinical setting."

Rev. Janet L. Hanson, M.Div., has worked as a health care Chaplain for 20 years, serving in a variety of settings including medical, psychiatric and addiction recovery programs. She has also served as an interim pastor for a United Methodist congregation. Prior to joining Sacred Heart’s CPE program she served as Director of Chaplaincy Services at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Berkeley/Oakland, California. Janet has certificates of specialization in addiction studies, spiritual direction and massage therapy. She is active in her denomination through 10 years of service as an interview chair for the western region of the Board of Higher Education and Ministry, Chaplaincy Division, of the UMC. Janet also served as Chair of the Development Committee and is currently a member of the Certification Committee for the Pacific Region of ACPE. Her interests include exploring all varieties of visual arts, spiritual formation and being a mother to her two children.

“I am committed to the experiential education model that CPE uses to learn ministry,” Janet says. “I love theologizing in community and challenging myself and others to embody what we believe in the practice of spiritual care. I strongly believe that, as religious leaders, we have a privilege and responsibility to journey with others through valleys of suffering and death with a heart of hope. As a CPE supervisor, I strive to model and teach these values.”
