Welcome to Sacred Heart Medical Center and our ACPE-accredited Clinical Pastoral
Education Program. Students who join us in the study and practice of Pastoral Care do so in an atmosphere that is supportive of their personal and professional growth.
We value our students’ contributions to the spiritual
care provided to patients, patients' loved ones and staff
at Sacred Heart and aim to make this experience equally valuable to
our students.
Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Oregon, is nationally recognized for its dedication to both exceptional medicine and compassionate care. With 432 beds, it is the largest hospital between Portland and San Francisco and the only
Level II trauma center in Lane County. As the primary acute-care hospital serving a large part of west-central Oregon, Sacred Heart cares for a wide range of patients, from healthy, full-term newborns to critically ill neonates, from adults with straightforward knee replacements to complex heart cases. A 36-bed
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit cares for premature and ill infants born at Sacred Heart and transported from other Oregon hospitals.
The Oregon Heart & Vascular Center
has been named one of the country’s top 100 hospitals for cardiovascular care. Other key services include the
Oregon Rehabilitation Center, orthopedics, adult intensive care, neurology, general surgery, and
home health and hospice. CPE students will find ministry opportunities in all of these areas. Placements may be available in our rural sister hospitals in
Cottage Grove and Florence
and our medical clinics as well.
Guided by the values of our sponsoring order, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, we keep healing and compassionate care as the focus of all that we do. That focus influences everything from our employee benefit plans to the design of our facilities, including
both Sacred Heart campuses at RiverBend
and University District. Our mission leads us to create opportunities for innovations in patient care, including such initiatives in
end-of-life care as the volunteer-based
No One Dies Alone program and
Strings of Compassion, the largest hospital-based music thanatology program in the world. Sacred Heart’s Center for Mission and Renewal serves employees by providing quiet retreat space for individuals and groups, chair massage, a relaxation chair, an outdoor labyrinth, and a two-day Renewal Experience available free to all employees to help them reconnect and reaffirm the gifts they bring to work in the health care setting. The Pastoral Care and CPE offices are located in the heart of this innovative center.
While Sacred Heart’s mission is a reflection of the Christian tradition of our sponsoring sisters, Sacred Heart is a place where people of every tradition and walk of life are welcome and treated with respect for their individual dignity and worth. Our CPE program is an interfaith ministry as well. We welcome students from all spiritual traditions and practices to join and enrich our diverse learning community.
