Types of procedures Colonoscopy: A procedure for viewing the interior lining of the large intestine (colon) using a small camera on a flexible fiber-optic tube. Colonoscopy is used to detect abnormalities in the colon and to obtain tissue specimens for biopsy. A screening colonoscopy is recommended for detection of colon cancer in patients 50 and over and for those without a family history of colon disease. Upper endoscopy: A procedure using a thin, flexible lighted tube that allows the physician to look inside the esophagus, stomach and duodenum (first part of the small intestine). The procedure might be used to discover the reason for swallowing difficulties, nausea, vomiting, reflux, bleeding, indigestion, abdominal pain or chest pain. Anal and rectal surgical procedures are sometimes performed in the office. Some common procedures are hernia repair, hemorrhoidectomy, fissurectomy and cyst removal. Gastroenterology services are available at the Downtown Eugene Clinic.
