Indications for exam:
This procedure is designed to detect, define
and quantitate various hemodynamic functions of the heart. These functions
include ventricular function (pumping action of the heart) including overall
ejection fraction and regional contractility of the myocardium, cardiac chamber
volumes and cardiac output, and detection and quantitation of intracardiac valve
incompetence. This study is useful in following changes in these
quantitative parameters over a period of time.
Principle:
Gated heart imaging involves the use of a
radiopharmaceutical that labels the intravascular space - such as 99mTc-tagged
RBC's. The technique is based on imaging the left ventricle for a large
number of beats. The R-wave of each beat triggers the image data division
into a designated number of frames to span each beat. This summing process
continues until sufficient counts are present in each frame to permit analysis
of the composite cardiac cycle.
