Nuclear Medicine at Sacred Heart Medical Center
Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI)

Patient Information

Indications for exam:

Myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) is used to quantitate blood flow to the heart muscle non-invasively.  This study can be done at rest and/or in conjunction with a stress test (either exercise treadmill or pharmacological).  It is particularly useful in evaluating patients with either suspected or known coronary artery disease (CAD).  The technique utilized is dependent on symptoms, underlying medical conditions and current weight.

Techniques used at Sacred Heart Medical Center are:

  • Dual isotope using 201 TL and 99mTc

  • Two-day rest/stress using 99mTc on separate days

  • One-day rest/stress using 99mTc

  • Resting/viability using 201 TL

Required scheduling information:

  • Patient name, DOB, current weight and home phone.

  • Reason for study (i.e., CP, SOB, syncope, CAD, etc)

  • Recent symptoms, physical findings and prior cardiac disease history

  • Is the patient claustrophobic?  Will they need sedation?

  • Does the patient have a history of breathing problems, COPD, inhaler use or on portable oxygen?  Can they lie flat?

  • Is the patient diabetic?  Can they tolerate fasting?  If not, click here for diabetic eating instructions.

  • Any known allergies?

  • What type of stress test - treadmill, Adenosine or Dobutamine?

  • What medications is the patient currently taking?  Please have them bring a current list with them to their appointment.

  • These studies are currently scheduled through the Oregon Heart & Vascular Institute.
