Cholescintigraphy with Ejection Fraction

Patient Information

Indications for exam:

A functional motility disorder of the gallbladder has been thought to produce recurrent biliary pain in patients without gallstones.  These patients have typical biliary symptoms by clinical history, but a negative diagnostic work-up including ultrasound, cholecytography and cholescintigraphy.   Cholescintigraphy provides an opportunity for the accurate reproducible quantitative study of gallbladder motility.  The administration of cholecystokinin (Kinevac) in a controlled infusion allows for a reproducible test of gallbladder contractility to a known stimulus.  A 30 minute infusion of Cholecystokinin (generic Sincalide) and measurement of the gallbladder ejection fraction after the infusion ends has proved to be a highly reproducible technique.  Cholecystectomy has been found to alleviate biliary-type pain in the majority of patients with a reduced gallbladder ejection fraction.  Refer to:  JNM Vol. 40, No. 12, December 1999.
