Bile Leak

 

Indications for exam:

Indications for this study include post surgical (biliary tract) complications or suspected post-surgical leak and further definition of hepatic colloid defects.

Principle:

This study allows for the functional imaging of the liver and gallbladder as well as assessing the patency of the biliary tract.  The administered 99mTc-IDA radiopharmaceutical is cleared from the blood by the hepatocytes and then secreted into the biliary tract allowing for imaging in the normal individual of the gallbladder, major hepatic ducts and common bile duct.  The entrance of the radiopharmaceutical into the gallbladder indicates patency of the cystic duct.  The presence of activity in the duodenum and small bowel indicates patency of the common bile duct.  The presence of 99mTc-IDA outside of the biliary tract and intestine indicate bile leak.

Required scheduling information:

  • Patient name, DOB, current weight and home phone.

  • Any prior gallbladder surgery?  

  • Morphine sulfate allergy?  Patient must provide a driver in the event we administer Morphine.

  • Any other diagnostic procedures done prior to this study?  Please fax copy of ultrasound results if done to 686-7012 prior to patient's exam date.

  • Has patient eaten within 48 hours?
