Indications for exam:
Indications for this study include post
surgical (biliary tract) complications or suspected post-surgical leak and
further definition of hepatic colloid defects.
Principle:
This study allows for the functional imaging of
the liver and gallbladder as well as assessing the patency of the biliary
tract. The administered 99mTc-IDA radiopharmaceutical is cleared from the
blood by the hepatocytes and then secreted into the biliary tract allowing for
imaging in the normal individual of the gallbladder, major hepatic ducts and
common bile duct. The entrance of the radiopharmaceutical into the
gallbladder indicates patency of the cystic duct. The presence of activity
in the duodenum and small bowel indicates patency of the common bile duct.
The presence of 99mTc-IDA outside of the biliary tract and intestine indicate
bile leak.
