Sacred Heart Medical Center, University District
 
Along with the construction of Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend, a major renovation is planned for Sacred Heart’s current campus on Hilyard Street in Eugene, now known as the University District campus. Beginning in 2008 the campus, which has been home to Sacred Heart for more than 70 years, will undergo a substantial renovation, including removal of some of the older buildings and modifications to interior spaces. A new entrance off Alder Street will provide improved pedestrian amenities and more patient/visitor parking spaces for those requiring ready access to hospital services. The following is a quick overview of plans for this campus.

Campus vision

  • Provide a distinctive identity.
  • Facilitate development of Centers of Excellence.
  • Support community and regional needs.
  • Contribute to vitality of the West University Neighborhood.
  • Facilitate collaboration between University of Oregon, OHSU and Sacred Heart.

Scope of renovation

  • Renovation begins in 2008.
  • Renovation includes:
  • Removal of some of the older buildings.
  • Retrofitting the remaining buildings to meet new seismic standards for hospitals.
  • Moving the entrance from Hilyard Street to Alder Street.
  • Developing new green spaces and planting trees. 
  • Area of current campus to be demolished: 321,200 square feet (31 percent). 
  • Area of campus to be renovated: 450,000 square feet. 
  • Area of resulting campus: 720,400 square feet. 
  • Estimated employees: 1,400.
  • Phase 1 renovation complete: 2010. 
  • Cost: $97 million.

  • 24-hour Emergency Department.
  • General medicine and oncology (cancer) beds.
  • Centers of Excellence:
  • Neurosciences Institute (also at RiverBend), including Gamma Knife Center as well as the Oregon Rehabilitation Center, with physical, occupational and speech therapy.
  • Behavioral Health Services.
  • Gerontology Institute, including Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) unit.
  • Support services and expansion space.
  • Oregon Imaging Center.
  • Laboratory.
  • PeaceHealth Medical Group primary care physicians and specialists.
  • Center for Medical Education and Research (UO, OHSU, Sacred Heart partnership).
