Courageous Kids

Courageous Kids is a grief support program for children and teens, sponsored by Hospice of Sacred Heart. Adults may sometimes try to protect children from the facts of death, feeling that they are too young to understand or will become too upset. However, we know that children who don’t grieve the death of someone significant in their lives can develop physical and emotional problems throughout their lives. Courageous Kids believes:

  • Grief is a normal response to the death of a loved one.

  • Children grieve as intensely as do adults, but in different ways.

  • It is essential for the healthy development of a child to grieve a significant loss.

  • Healing from a painful loss is possible with support and acceptance.

  • Children need support that is appropriate to their developmental stage.

Courageous Kids offers three programs for children ages 6 to 18, each of which provides a safe, confidential environment designed to normalize feelings and help children and teens process and express grief.

Families, teachers, counselors, doctors, or others may refer children to Courageous Kids. Following the referral, the children and one or more parent or guardian meet with a Courageous Kids staff member to discuss the program and the children’s needs. Throughout the program, the Courageous Kids staff will give feedback if further counseling is recommended.
