Strings of Compassion - Music Thanatologists

Jane Franz, Gary Plouff and Sister Vivian Ripp, SNJM

Music-thanatology originated from the vision and life work of Therese Shroeder-Sheker. She opened the Chalice of Repose Project-School of Music-Thanatology at St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula, Montana in 1992. Ms. Shroeder-Sheker gathered and trained local faculty and regularly flew in college-level faculty from around the United States. Her dream was to develop an allied field within medicine. The Chalice of Repose is now based in Portland, Oregon, and serves students from around the world. The certificate program is a four semester program with a semester length clinical practice. All of the Music-Thanatologists at Sacred Heart Medical Center have completed the four semesters of training required for certification. All three staff members are involved in continuing to develop the field of Music-Thanatology.
