Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - Sacred Heart Medical Center

Sacred Heart's 22-bed Level III NICU is staffed by four neonatologists, who are always available for consults. The unit was recently remodeled to reflect the latest developmentally focused care model.  State-of-the-art high frequency ventilation is available for newborns with underdeveloped lungs.  A transport team staffed by specially trained registered nurses and respiratory technologists is on call 24 hours a day to pick up and safely transport premature or ill infants born in hospitals in outlying areas.

Inside, our mobile transport has all the necessary equipment to provide immediate Level III NICU medical care

The babies are transported in a specially designed neonatal mobile intensive care ambulance, purchased in March 2001 entirely with community donations. The ambulance, one of the largest in the state, is able to transport two complete mobile intensive care isolettes.  Some 75 babies a year are transported to Sacred Heart's NICU from referral hospitals in a five-county area.
