St. John Medical Center Renovation Campaign
An Investment in Our Community’s Health Is anything more important to all of us than our health or that of our family or community? Of course not. That is why St. John Medical Center is about to transform its legacy of 60 years of service to the Lower Columbia Region into one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier, state-of-the-art medical centers. Our plan is to renovate the entire interior space of our 8 story 1968 patient tower into a modern healing center capable of serving this community far into the future. The time is now. But, we will need your help. The average useful life of a hospital is 40 years, according to the American Institute of Architects. Even that time capsule has imploded, however, because health care itself has changed so dramatically during the past decade alone. Continual reductions in Medicare reimbursement present a constant challenge to hospitals all over the nation, including ours. The success of St. John will depend on our ability to offer the kinds of services that truly meet the needs of the people we serve 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. St. John has not wavered in its commitment and mission to serve everyone who needs helps in our community. We have provided more than $42 million over the past five years in charity and uncompensated health care as well as other community programs and services that promote healing and health. We have also assisted social service agencies in meeting their mission as well. Philanthropy must play an ever-increasing role in assuring the future of major projects. The days are long gone when a renovation of this magnitude could be accomplished out of operating budgets alone. Together, we will transform our 1968 patient tower into a 21st century medical center capable of serving us and the next generation well. The Foundation has the opportunity to talk to individuals whose lives have been changed in our Critical Care Unit (CCU) and Emergency Departments. Again and again I hear the same thing…they care….they saved my life. Many of these stories are filled with tears and laughter. Many are just grateful that we have state of the art care here in our community. As part of the hospital’s renovation project, the CCU will increase the number and size of its rooms and allow for expansion of future services.
If you’ve driven by lately you’ve seen the flurry of activity around the ED entrance. So what is really going on? The Emergency Department is being renovated to increase the beds from 22 to 37 and add 14,000 square feet to the Department. This will allow the ED staff to work more efficiently in a larger space. With this renovation the SJMC Emergency Department will be well equipped to handle anything from “weekend warrior” accidents with a lawnmower at home and student sports injuries right on up to a multi-patient emergency such as a chemical spill, railroad or mill accident or a school related incident. The Lower Columbia region should be comforted by knowing that we have access to a top-notch facility. The price tag - ED renovation $11,877,000. This is being paid for in a variety of ways: St. John Medical Foundation has received grant funds from regional foundations who believe that a state-of-the-art Emergency Department is essential. Physicians and medical center staff and employees have contributed to the renovation along with generous gifts from local families and individuals. The Foundation has set a goal to raise $500,000 for the ED renovation and we have received $280,000 to date. As you can see, this is a big and important project. We still need your participation in the form of a monetary gift to complete this important step for our community.
Decentralized EMR (Electronic Medical Record) along with nursing stations and integrated technology will reinforce patient-centered care. Each floor will be fitted with support spaces and a family support area. Intermittent patient exam rooms are also provided. Each floor will have public-private elevator flow. The care model for these floors is consistent with median national care model benchmarks.
New moms and families can now enjoy the privacy of a spacious, hotel-like room for their special delivery. Throughout the birthing experience-labor, delivery, and recovery-moms can stay in their private birthing room. Each private suite is equipped with top-quality medical equipment, private bathrooms, and comfortable furnishings. The new private rooms and surroundings help make each family’s individual experience as unique and meaningful as their new baby. The new Birth Center at St. John has been a labor of love for those involved in the design and planning. Design teams made up of staff from the labor and delivery unit, nursing leaders, and clinicians were involved at every stage of development, from designing plans to reviewing a mock up of a private room. Their valuable input and expertise shaped the outcome of their baby-the new Birth Center. Decisions about the design of the patient rooms, the features of the special care nursery, the furnishings and décor, were made with the goal of providing both clinical excellence and a warm, nurturing care environment. Today they can take pride in knowing their suggestions and ideas have created a birth center that enhances the care and patient and family experience for the nearly 1,300 babies who begin life at St. John each year. That’s something we can all say “Yah, Baby!” about. |
