A Checklist of Questions to Ask Your Doctor or Nurse

Before choosing chemotherapy or radiation as a treatment option, you might want to ask some questions regarding your treatment.  The following questions may be helpful when speaking with the doctor:

  • What is the goal of my treatment?
  • What are the changes that the treatment will work?
  • After  treatment is complete, will I be cured, in remission, or relieved of my symptoms?
  • Are there other treatments to achieve the same goal?
  • How will I know if the treatment is working?
  • What are the potential risks and side effects of the treatments?
  • How will I receive chemotherapy/radiation therapy, how often, and for how long?
  • Are there ways to help me prepare for treatment and decrease the chance of side effects?
  • Will I be restricted in any way? My activities?  My work?  Exercise?  Sexual activities?
