Responsibilities of Staff
- Insure participants have been properly processed for placement. If you have any questions or concerns regarding a placement, please notify the contact person assigned to the participant (the participant is required to present this information upon checking in) or
contact us.
- Insure you are eligible to precept a participant. There are no requirements to have a participant job shadow during your shift other than your agreement to do so. Some experiences require preceptors to have certain qualifications. Please check with the participant’s instructor/advisor or
contact us for more information.
- Welcome participants in a caring and nurturing manner. Discuss the experience
objective(s) with them seek to fulfill the objectives to the best of your ability. If you are unsure as to what the experience should entail, please contact the participant’s instructor/advisor or
contact us for assistance.
- Always remember, participants are our guests. In the event that the department and/or patient needs are not conducive to having a participant present, or the participant is not appropriately prepared for the
experience
(see dress code), please excuse them and ask them to notify their contact person or
contact us for reassignment.
- If a participant becomes injured or has an exposure, please obtain the necessary treatment
through ED or Urgent Care followed by reporting it to the immediate department supervisor as you would for any visitor. Also include contacting the participant’s instructor/advisor as soon as possible and the Department of Learning and Development
(L&D) at 686-8527.
- Any participant reasonably suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs
must be dismissed from the Student Experience immediately. Reporting of such an event will be to the immediate PeaceHealth supervisor, participant’s instructor/advisor and to
L&D at 686-8527.
Examples of reasonable suspicion may include, but are not limited to:
- smell of alcohol or drugs
- observed alcohol or drug use during Clinical Experiences hours on PeaceHealth premises,
- apparent physical state of impairment, incoherent mental state, marked changes in mood or personal behavior that are otherwise
unexplainable.
- Participants ARE NOT to do any patient care until skill competency has been verified. Please contact the participant’s instructor/advisor or
contact us if you have any questions or concerns regarding participants doing patient care.

- In addition:
- All participants must be processed through the Department of Learning and Development
(L&D) before presenting to the unit/department. You and/or your designee will be contacted once the participant has been properly prepared for the experience. If a participant presents to the unit/department without L&D approval, please refer them to
contact us. If a participant is allowed to continue their
Clinical Experiences without the proper preparation, this may be in violation of PeaceHealth rules and regulations.
- Please do not sign any “agreements” or “contracts” with participants.
Doing so conflicts with agreements and contracts maintained by L&D that are obtained with the assistance of the PeaceHealth Legal Department. All necessary paperwork will be obtained and stored in the Department
of L&D per PeaceHealth policy.
- Notify the L&D department of any adverse events associated with a participant. These events would include:
- Injury or exposure
- Improper behavior
- Suspected impairment
- Questionable competency
- Conflict
- Breech of confidentiality
- Departments inability to provide Clinical Experiences
(we can suspend requests to your department for however long you deem necessary).
